The name Reiki derives from the Japanese pronunciation of two Chinese characters that are said to describe the energy itself:
rei (meaning 'soul' or 'spirit') and ki (Chinese qi meaning breath or 'life force energy'). Common translations of the term reiki are "aura", "soul energy" and "spiritually guided energy".

| The Reiki energy enters the body through the top of the head and is released through the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It can be accessed freely with intent. The hands direct the energy desired. The energy is transferred by touch or having the hands above the area worked on. To access the use of the Reiki energy, a process called ‘an attunement’ is necessary. This is how the channel is open for the energy to flow. The Reiki Master is able to aid in this process to create this miracle. The Reiki energy is always positive energy for healing purposes. |
| The Reiki session can be received sitting or lying down. The energy goes where it is needed. The practitioner is not in control of where the energy goes in the body. The energy will travel to the point it is most needed. To comfort the receiver, the practitioner will hold their hands close to the point of concern of the receiver in the treatment. It is always important to honor that we are no more than a vehicle that is being used to transfer energy. The healing is coming from the universe, not from us personally. The person receiving Reiki may experience a sensation of heat, tingling, cold, pressure, etc. This is thought to be the part of the healing process. |
